I have enjoyed well thought out speeches in the past but I have always appreciated those that I could re-read again after. This one I regret not being there for, but value all the more the ability to read and contemplate and get the most out of this type of presentation. I understand the tediousness of transcribing and appreciate your efforts all the more. Thanks, Dave.

Thank you for this article. Indeed, we cannot wait, which is why I donated over 500 books written by diverse authors to the Lafayette Urban Ministry after my late husband was killed. Small children of all colors need to see themselves accurately portrayed in books written by their own community members. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop in 1990 published an essay entitled, "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors, explaining why it is so important for black children to read books written by black authors (mirrors) and black children to read books written by white authors (windows) and for everyone regardless of ethnicity or culture to read books about each other in order to walk through the sliding door. Substitute in any race to my previous sentences and they are true. Every human on this planet has red blood despite our different hair and skin colors. The work I did in preparation for that donation was transformative for me. The highlight was a conversation with Jason Reynolds in Kalamazoo in 2015. Or maybe the best moment was reading to young children in the basement of the Second Baptist Church. When we open our hearts to thou, the world is a brighter place. Thank you, Mr. Bangert for this piece.

Thanks for sharing this speech. Too often the voices of people like Natalie Murdock, so it's refreshing to see you giving her a megaphone!
